From the beginning of the formation of the More Light Study Group, one thing was clear: if Faith Des Peres was going to become a More Light congregation, we were going to do it in a way that involved the congregation as much as possible. This was not going to be something that ‘happened’ to us. We would be intentional in discussing together, learning together, and growing together. After gathering members of the study group, the first thing we did was to attempt to contact all members of the congregation to survey their attitude toward becoming More Light and to make space for any questions they had. After finding our congregation incredibly supportive of the mission of More Light, we moved forward encouraged and energized. We hosted two separate Happy Hours to give space for fun and informal conversation. We hosted a book study on God and the Gay Christian by Matthew Vines, as well as an Inclusion Webinar led by an outside speaker that made space for us to study how we can live more fully into our mission to welcome all people. We also wrote articles for our weekly newsletter on topics ranging from pronouns useage to the history of More Light Presbyterians to pieces on ongoing social issues related to More Light. After more than a year of activity, the More Light Study Group felt it was time to move to the next step- a congregational vote. The Group crafted a welcome statement, solicited congregational feedback, and, with session approval, set a date for the called congregational meeting. At the meeting itself, passionate support for becoming More Light was voiced, and a unanimous ‘Yes!’ went up. We are thrilled for this next step on our journey to full inclusion and affirmation of all of God’s children, and cannot wait to see the ways God will call us to celebrate and live out our mission!
