Springdale Presbyterian underwent years of discernment in the past about what a faithful understanding of welcome, inclusion, and affirmation of all of God’s people really meant within Christ’s church. That process eventually led to the congregation’s willingness to call a new pastor in 2016 who was LGBTQ+, and adopting an official welcome statement that included affirmation of our welcome of LGBTQ+ individuals into the full life and leadership of the congregation. It’s important for us to show others that we not only talk the talk, but we walk the walk when we say that all of God’s children are welcome here. For us, the discussion about becoming a More Light congregation was easy. Our Session’s unanimous vote to become a More Light member congregation was a bit of playing “catch-up,” and further recognition of our beliefs and actions within the church and community.
