Biography

Westminster Presbyterian Church in Point Loma has been on track to be a More Light church for many years. When the PCUSA made their statement over 20 years ago that LGBTQ+ individuals could not be ordained, our then pastor, Rev. Mikel Taxer, said from the pulpit that it was wrong and if we saw fit our congregation should go ahead and ordain whomever God calls. Our next pastor, Rev. Tony Wolfe, gave a series of lectures on the LGBTQ+ community and Christianity, as well as inviting an LGBTQ+ group of students from Point Loma Nazarene University to hold weekly Sunday afternoon meetings in our church library. Our current Pastor, Rev. Megan Cochran, comes from a More Light Church in the Chicago Presbytery. We called her to Westminster with great enthusiasm and joy. Her installation was a true celebration of diversity, art, and the love of our Lord.

Our church has always been a place of creativity and welcome. Being officially recognized as a More Light Church is a logical next step in our mission and identity as an inclusive and loving church. It is beautiful to see our church embrace this identity that has always been modeled for us by our pastors. The Session voted unanimously to become a More Light church. We are grateful to be continuing on this journey and look forward to learning more about welcoming, inviting, and sharing God’s love with all of God’s children.
