Statement of Inclusiveness
June 13, 1996

WHEREAS the Light Street Presbyterian Church believes that all human beings are created by God, and

WHEREAS the congregation believes that the following statements of inclusion from the Book of Order are a faithful attempt to follow the example of Jesus Christ:

“Our unity in Christ enables and requires the church to be open to all persons and to the varieties of talents and gifts of God’s people” (G-4.0402);

“Persons of all racial ethnic groups, different ages, both sexes, various disabilities, diverse geographical areas, different theological positions consistent with the Reformed tradition, as well as different marital conditions (married, single, widowed, or divorced) shall be guaranteed full participation” (G-4.0403);

“No persons shall be denied membership because of race, ethnic origin, world condition, or any other reason not related to profession of faith“ (G-5.0103); and

WHEREAS the congregation recognizes that “the church has been slow in its understanding of its own excluding behavior, as evidenced by its slowness to understand the evils of slavery and segregation and centuries-long denial of ordination to women” (Overture from Baltimore Presbytery to the 1996 General Assembly);

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Light Street Presbyterian Church affirms the right of all its members to full participation, including ordination as Elder and Minister of Word and Sacrament, regardless of their race, ethnic background, age, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, or disability.
