Newport Presbyterian Church
Biography
In the 1990s, members of Newport Presbyterian Church, in Bellevue, WA, formed a committee on GLBT rights to push for full inclusion in the life of the church, and our Session began a study of the issues around ordination. We also began to ordain openly gay and lesbian elders. In the 2000s, our head pastor defied church rules by performing weddings for “all committed loving couples,” and in 2012 he spoke up in a local television ad about clergy who supported a state referendum for same-sex marriage. We are a member of the Covenant Network of Presbyterians, and our tagline is “Welcoming in Spirit, Progressive in Theology.”
