At the core of the identity of Saint Barnabas Presbyterian Church is the belief God invites all people into a life of faith through Jesus Christ. Hospitality and warm welcome are hallmarks of our life together. Recently, our deacons and elders adopted a new Purpose Statement that embodies that mindset: “We share the love of Christ with our community and the world.” It is in seeking to live out that purpose statement that our membership committee has discerned the call to become a More Light congregation.
Saint Barnabas has a long history of inclusivity of the LGBTQ+ community. Our session has enthusiastically supported ordination of elders and deacons no matter their gender or orientation. Our clergy are supported in performing all marriages in our sanctuary. Our children and youth curricula are screened for inclusivity. Our staff actively attend to inclusivity in programs, publications, and pastoral care. Becoming a More Light congregation is a proclamation of love and joy; a recognition of who we already are; a commitment to what we hope to achieve together.
By becoming a More Light congregation, we hope to better communicate to our community who we are at Saint Barnabas. We hope to grow in our practices of intentional welcome and hospitality to members of the LGBTQ+ community. We hope to utilize the resources and tools More Light provides to its churches. In short, we hope to more fully live out our Christian witness to love God and one another through our partnership with More Light Presbyterians.
