Second Presbyterian ChurchSecond Presbyterian Church
Second Presbyterian Church in Kansas City has been affirming for several decades now. A beloved staff member, the church organist, risked his employment and standing in the church by coming out. He preempted any blow back by turning in his resignation at that time to which the Session and Congregation unanimously rejected. He was loved, celebrated and it was at that time the church leadership voted to be a church that would never close its doors or its inroads to ministry leadership to anyone in the LGBTQIA community. In 1996, the church helped fund the (at that time) only AIDS Hospice residential care facility (Hope Care Center, 115 E 83rd St, Kansas City, MO 64114) west of the Mississippi and it is still in operation today. Today the church has members of the LGBTQIA community on staff, in positions of influential leadership both on committees and on the Deacon Board. The recent vote to join the More Light community is the results of efforts to be more visible to the LGBTQIA community and to open the doors even wider to all who would need a church home.
